When it comes to settling down for retirement, personal safety should be an important consideration for any potential homeowner. Thankfully, the City of Chilliwack has seen a drastic drop in crime rate over the last decade according to a report from Statistics Canada.

Across all the different categories, the crime rate has dropped 38% from 16,525 to 10,179 per 100,000 over the last decade. This puts Kelowna ahead of cities like Nanaimo (10,376), Kamloops (11,160), and Prince George (14,585).

Here are some of the more notable findings of the report:

  • Motor vehicle theft is down 61%
  • Breaking and entering is down 49%
  • Theft under $5000 is down 48%

Why the sudden change? University of the Fraser Valley criminology professor Irwin Cohen chalks the improved statistics to smarter police forces that are getting better at targeting prolific offenders. According to an RCMP press release, “a small number of people commit the vast majority of the property crime in the Upper Fraser Valley”.
